We have been trained to learn lies for decades. Just ask the average American when our Declaration of Independence was signed, and they will tell you it was July 4th of 1776. The truth is that the Declaration was not actually signed until August 3rd. Ask the average American citizen who was our first elected President and they will tell you George Washington. Truth be told, John Hanson was our first President and General George Washington was actually our 8th President. Our country's first constitutional document was the Articles of Confederation which was a good first effort and led to our current U.S. Constitution. Knowledge of these events helps us understand the importance of our nation's Constitution. We should never ignore the intentions of our founding documents, including the importance of the 9th and 10th Amendments. They are there for good reason.
These little trivia caveats deliver many different reactions when I share them with students throughout our state. I have visited 3rd grade classrooms and University classrooms talking and sharing our Declaration and Constitution with students. The third grade students are excited to learn something new. They like the feeling of knowing something their own parents and teachers don’t know. The college students get angry. They don’t like being lied to and they want to know why. Both groups have one thing in common, whether they be 8 or 28, they realize that knowledge is power.
Let me share with you the two most sinister and disturbing lies we have been trained to believe.
We have been tricked into thinking that we could not possibly understand our Constitution. My fellow Americans, nothing could be further from the truth. Our Constitution was not written for lawyers. It was not written for politicians. Our Constitution was written by the people, for the people. “WE the People” means just that, WE the People; not WE the all knowing folks here in Congress.
Our Constitution is not written in legalese. Our Constitution does not belong to those in Washington, DC. It does not belong to Constitutional attorneys. It belongs to YOU. It is not “the” Constitution,” it is “OUR” Constitution. Once you have been convinced that you cannot understand “the” Constitution, you are at the mercy of those who do understand “that” document. Anyone who has had to pay an attorney to help read a contract before they sign it understands how this works. There is no mall print nor Ivy League terms in your Constitution.
The other big lie is that the government grants you rights. Our government does not grant you the right of free speech, the right to bear arms, or the right to gather. These rights are “unalienable” rights granted to us by our Creator, and the government is granted the job of protecting these rights. Unalienable means that you cannot be separated from these rights.
Our ninth and tenth Amendments to our Constitution distinctly clarify our form of government as a Republic, as opposed to a Democracy. This distinction is monumental. I challenge you to read these Amendments. Don’t be afraid to give it a try, both of them are merely one sentence in length. Now how is that for simple?
It is time for American citizens to stop allowing themselves to be duped out of their power over their own lives and own governance. It is time we all stand up to the challenge of being an informed citizen of this country. We have inherited the most precious heirlooms to ever be passed down from generation to generation; Freedom, Liberty, and Justice for ALL.
I suggest we not only require our children to learn our Constitution, but we make sure each of them is given their own copy of our Declaration and our Constitution. Be sure to add a warning label; “No Attorneys Necessary.” It is time we realize that we do not need a law degree, a uniform, a seat in government, or a pay check to guard our inheritance. It is our duty. Stand with me today and take the Oath. “I, Sherri Reese, do solemnly swear that I will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend my Constitution of the United States." It is Time.
